The second time frame - the medium-term researchHere we focus on three basic issues: research and development in the field of recombinant proteins, the detection of pathogenic agents, and the application of molecular-genetic methods in medical research. Our goal is to use the basic data alongside with already established methods for applied research in the medical field. The focus lies on the issues of research of molecular causes of drug resistance, tissue regeneration, and genetic manipulation of cell cultures. In our study, we particularly use established techniques of molecular cloning and methods of gene expression quantifi cation by means of DNA arrays and real-time PCR. Concerning our realized projects, we managed to produce selected recombinant proteins with complex posttranslational modifications, e.g. in human neuron-specific enolase (NSE) or human sex hormon-binding globulin (SHBG). These proteins are used as standards in immuno-diagnostic sets. We developed modified cell lines for testing selective cyclooxygenase inhibitors and for testing the substrate specifi city of selected drug transporters. In cooperation with other (mainly clinical) institutions, we participate in research of potential biomarkers of drug resistance or tissue regeneration. In terms of potential cooperation, we are able to carry out quantifications of gene expression in high quality either by DNA arrays or qRT-PCR, various types of sequence analyses and the production of recombinant proteins in eukaryotic cell systems.
