Detection method: quantitative real-time PCR

The kit is intended for detection and DNA quantification of Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2) by real-time PCR method.

Clinical implications

Herpes simplex virus 2 (HSV2) is an enveloped DNA-virus of Herpesviridae family belonging to the Simplexvirus genus. For these viruses a short replication time and the ability to
trigger latent infection of cells is typical. HSV2 virus enters the human body through the mucosis of the genitals. The virus proliferates in the entrance gate and extends further on to the nerve endings.

Then it arrives in the ganglia cells by axonal transport where it lasts for practically the whole life. Reactivation of infection and repetitive proliferation of the virus, so called recurrent infection, can happen under the influence of different types of stress (fever, hormonal influences, insolation etc). Primary infection triggered by HSV2 virus is demonstrated in adults as herpes genitalis, it can occur as generalized herpes with afflictions of the skin, brain, liver and lungs of newly born babies of non immune mothers. The course of recurrent infection of HSV2 is usually
much milder than at the primary infection.

Dual-labeled hydrolysis probes Dual-labeled hydrolysis probes

The technology of dual-labeled hydrolysis probes (also called TaqMan® probes) exploits the 5 ́-3 ́ exonuclease activity of Taq DNA polymerase to cleave dual-labeled hydrolysis probes. Hydrolysis probes are labeled at the 5´ end with a fluorescent dye (reporter) and at the 3´ end with a quencher.
